 Identity crisis?

Jeremiah 29:7

Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."

During the European football championships of this summer I was an enthusiastic English supporter of England - until the Iceland game. Then I invoked the spirit of great granny Harris and became Welsh – and ‘our boys’ did themselves proud!

Having an identity crisis is something Christians have to learn to live with. The bible describes Christians as in the world not of the world, citizens of heaven, sojourners and exiles to the present world. How then should we interact with the world we inhabit when we are Christian first and (in my case) English second?

Jeremiah’s answer is prayerfully.

Writing to the ethnically cleansed people of God languishing in Babylon the prophet says it will profit you if you pray.

There is an appropriate loyalty that we owe to the created social structures within which we live. They are not perfect and Christians should challenge and seek to change the imperfections, in part by prayer.

At the moment prayer for healing and a reconciliation within the United Kingdom is the focus for us at the Baptist church following the bruising events of Brexit. We do also pray for the relations between nations, asking that they may be open handed and generous. In all things we look to God for healing now whilst holding in view his promise of a renewal of humanity which comes when King Jesus returns bringing heaven to earth. This renewed human society is described in terms of a city.

Revelation 21:23-24

The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendour into it. So it seems nations will continue to exist but they are healed and restored for the city is a garden city tree lined and the leaves of the trees are for the healing of the nations (22.2)

Maybe the ‘beautiful game’ will find a place there I don’t know but I do hope you know with certainty that you will be there, that you’re identity is in the fact that you are in Christ and he in you.
